Foreign Direct Investment and Growth
( More about this )
- Scatter plot relating inflows of foreign direct investment as a percentage of GDP and economic growth over the following ten years. At a very crude level shows a strong relationship between FDI and forthcoming economic growth. Animated for the period leading up to 1994 (thus the data on growth go to 2004). Could be an interesting starting point for a discussion that would include a discussion of exogenous that perhaps make the relationship between FDI and growth more or less persuasive.

Population Under $1 a Day
( More about this )
- Shows the percentage of the population living on less than 1 USD per day at purchasing power parity for 58 countries for which the statistic is applicable. Shows the prevalence of poverty as measured by a uniform international standard. Though the concept of absolute poverty remains valuable, data are the most recent available prior to 2000, rendering them quite out of date. The closely related chart of the percentage of the percentage of the population living on less than $2/day is available here: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/eco_pop_und_2_a_day-economy-population-under-2-day.

PPP Conversion Factor to Official Exchange Rate
( More about this )
- Bar chart of the relationship between the formal exchange rate and the exchange rate at purchasing power parity as of the most recent year (typically 2005). Of note is the fact that developing country currencies are often significantly undervalued, a fact that holds true for the rapidly developing BRIC countries. Comes with a rather unhelpfully colored graph.
