The Sun and the Weather Forecast

Activity 3. Earth’s atmosphere

The Earth’s atmosphere has five layers. They differ in their properties, which are shown in the diagram. The diagram contains several types of data — numerical, pictorial, and textual. These data are linked together.

Study the diagram and solve the following tasks:

    1. Write the names of the different layers of the atmosphere. Start with the layer closest to the Earth’s surface.
    2. At what height above the Earth’s surface are clouds located? In which sphere are they located?
    3. To what height does the mesosphere reach?
    4. What is the average temperature of the stratosphere?
    5. In which sphere does the temperature decrease with increasing altitude?
    6. In which sphere does the temperature increase most rapidly with increasing altitude?
    7. In which sphere do artificial satellites orbit the Earth? At what height are they approximately above the Earth’s surface?
