Activity 3. Earth’s atmosphere
The Earth’s atmosphere has five layers. They differ in their properties, which are shown in the diagram. The diagram contains several types of data — numerical, pictorial, and textual. These data are linked together.
Study the diagram and solve the following tasks:
-
- Write the names of the different layers of the atmosphere. Start with the layer closest to the Earth’s surface.
- At what height above the Earth’s surface are clouds located? In which sphere are they located?
- To what height does the mesosphere reach?
- What is the average temperature of the stratosphere?
- In which sphere does the temperature decrease with increasing altitude?
- In which sphere does the temperature increase most rapidly with increasing altitude?
- In which sphere do artificial satellites orbit the Earth? At what height are they approximately above the Earth’s surface?
